Commitment to equal rights and opportunity
The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs [LASODA] was established by the Lagos State Special People’s Law [LSSPL] of June 2011. The Governing Board was inaugurated by the Executive Governor of Lagos State on the 9th of July 2012 and charged with implementing the Law.
The Law seeks to uphold the rights of all persons with any form of disability [PWDs] in Lagos State by safeguarding them against all forms of discrimination and giving them equal rights and opportunities.
Issue guidelines for the education, social development, and welfare of persons with disability.
Collaborate with ministries, parastatals, and corporate bodies to ensure accessible and usable buildings.
Receive complaints from persons with disability on violations of their rights.
Investigate, prosecute, and sanction violations of the Law where appropriate.
Register and coordinate associations of persons with disability.
Re-orient and educate the public on the right attitude toward persons with disability.
Collect and collate data on persons with disability for proper government planning.
Issue directives and guidelines to relevant authorities on special sports.
Issue directives and guidelines to special schools for persons with disability.
Issue directives and guidelines on all manner of disabilities and preventive or curative exercises.
Actualise the enjoyment of all rights contained in the Law by persons with disability.
Issue and revoke certificates of disability, whether temporary or permanent.
Establish and promote schools, vocational centres, and rehabilitation centres.
Liaise with ministries and agencies so disability interests are considered in policies and programmes.
Keep and update a register and database of persons with disability.
Liaise with other countries and international organisations to bridge gaps in best practice.
Design and issue customised insignias for use at parking lots.
Lead advocacy and public enlightenment on empathy and inclusion.
Ensure compliance with all provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law.
The Office works with communities, institutions, ministries, and stakeholders to make Lagos more accessible, more responsive, and more equitable for persons with disabilities.
